Lessee, I'm 45 years old. High school graduate the first time around.
Service, then married. Worked to get my First Class Machinist ticket and
raise the familly.

Started gaming in the mid '70s, mostly war games with some D&D thrown
in. Then I found Traveller and started GM'ing.

Wound up stopping most gaming activities in the mid-80's when we got
into the SCA. Went that route for a number of years then stopped
altogether to go back to school.

Current status: I'm a Reliability Engineer specializing in rotating
equipment for an oil refiner in NJ. Three kids, two in the Marine Corp.
one a senior in high school. Now that I've settled well into my current
job I find that I have some free time again, so I re-started the gaming.
I do have to say that catching a copy of T4 and then this list helped
light the spark. Biggest problem (as always ) is finding the players.

I'm 34 years old, married with two young children. I've a PhD in
Classical languages and have just moved back to my home town to teach Latin
at the high school I graduated from. I started playing Traveller in the
early 80's, and GM'ed CT and MT (among many other things) off and on through
about 1990. I GM'ed a T4 campaign when it came out, but switched to AD&D to
find more players (hoping to convert them eventually). Since I've moved I
have had to get players all over again, so I reluctantly am starting a new
AD&D game, with Traveller back on the far horizon (after moving so many times
in the last ten years, I think I'm finally settled down, real house, real
yard, near family and friends). I supposed I was a geeky kind of guy of
sorts in High school, when they vote you most studious I guess that says it
all, although I seem to remember sending more time on RPG's than school work.
I also was an eagle scout and have always striven to be a real
straight-arrow square.

Subject: Like Andre Norton? Try Elizabeth Moon!

Greetings:

With the discussion recently about Andre Norton's Solar Queen series, I
thought I'd bring up Elizabeth Moon.

I'm in the middle of her "Heris Serrano" series (Sporting Chance, Hunting
Party, Winning Colors). Good stuff, especially for a Traveller game!

While not exactly Traveller space tech, there's a lot here you could adapt.
For example, in the first book, there's a good description of the ship's
hydroponic system and recycling system. The book I'm reading now (Winning
Colors) has some great space battles (although the jump system is not quite
the same as Traveller's system, there are a lot of items on sensors,
missiles, beam weapons, etc. that you could probably make use of).

In addition, you can get ideas on how to play Noble characters from these
books. There are some screamingly funny scenes about decorating a spaceship.
An invasion by roaches. A lot of stuff about what rich nobles do with their
spare time (whole planets devoted to raising horses, hunting, etc.).

Good stuff. She has also written a second series placed in the same universe,
the "Esmay Suiza" series. So far there are only two volumes out, Once a Hero
and Rules of Engagement (still only in hardcover) with at least a third being
written.

All are from (in the US at least) Baen Books.

Koman, Victor Kings of the High Frontier (Final Frontier Books 0-9665662-0-3,

Rob Prior! Our Rob Prior?????

The description of the book is:

"Near-future SF novel, book one of 'The High Pilgrimage'. Private concerns
plan their own various space launches, despite government efforts to stop
them. The afterword by Gregory Benford discusses the political realities of
space programs. This is a signed, limited edition of 1,250; a slipcased
deluxe edition of 250 ($75.00) is also available. order from Final Frontier

Anybody know if this is our Rob Prior??? Another life Rob???

It isn't impossible (say, a naval mutiny), but it would be pretty rare, and a patrol ship would respond by jumping out and informing the navy that there's a warship playing pirate in the area. The big problem with piracy with military ships is that they have no cargo space to speak of.

Hm? There's probably ways of recognizing ships later, but I wouldn't expect pirate identification to be all that easy.

It's possible, but requires a fairly heavy missile. You'd also need to give
it real sensors, since the standard GT missiles are theoretically
operator-guided (aiii...don't think about that one too hard).

I think a more accurate statement is that it does not have much of a
kill-radius... the "blast" will injure you at several meters even from a
"small" grenade.

49? Ahhh, ya wusses....<g>

The ClusterMuns Block-III Phalanx turret uses a 64-Megajoule 800ROF TFEL.
(In fact, it packs in three of 'em. And a gunner.)

Or, for an extra 72,000 credits, there's the triple 272-MJ X-Ray Goalkeeper

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of a merchant with bay cargo
doors....which open to reveal a fifty-ton missile bay, but yeah, the
principle's the same.

Actually, the real benefit is against opportunity 'muggers', because rather
than thinking "Hey, an unarmed merchant - easy pickings! Can we take her,
captain? Please?" the crew starts to think "Uhhh.....maybe this is that
Q-ship we heard about in the bar at the last port - the one that whacked the
Merc Cruiser last month..."

Once people start to consider that, then effectively every single freighter
in the operating area looks like a Q-ship ESPECIALLY the ones which look
really harmless. (Well, a Q-ship's going to want to look harmless, isn't
it?)

An 'organised crime' pirate whose life is piracy would probably attack
anyway and take their (actually quite good - the Navy is far from
everywhere) chances. It's the muggers who'll be put off since they don't
lose anything by walking away.

The half-lethality zone of an 'average' grenade is somewhere in the vicinity
of six metres. Without shrapnel it's closer to one or two.

However, as you say, injuries may be caused at a rather greater distance.

i love playing in Krynn,

several of my best freinds played a group of adventurious demi-humans who
loved to build new gear. The 'brains' of the operation was an gizmoteer
gnome (whose junk actually worked 80% of the time), the "Brawn" and actaul

impressionable kinder whose primary job was the apprentice of the two whose
common sense actually out weighed that of his elders (we all learned very
very fast to dread the 'oh shit what have we DONE now' phrase come form this
young and impressionable Kender... So much so we learned how to go form any

Kender are so fun.... Gods i miss a good AD&D campaign... i could really go
for dusting off those old books and break out my notes for the world my group
once explored and campaigned in.

Oh yes, Krynnish Kender, Krynnish Gnomes, Krynnish Elves (the orginal

Dwarfs, Forgotten Realms Half-lings, Forgotten Realms Dark Elves (and the

I really miss my old gameing group... the fates and winds of chance happen

That's exactly what I meant. And you mentioned "curiosity", another issue I
was addressing. Sometimes when our gaming group gets together, we take out
our characters and stay in "gaming mode" until we can't see straight, put
our stuff away and go home. Other times we play a little, chat a little,
thrash out a ship or castle or something, talk about books we've read, etc.
I signed up to the TML for the first reason; Gaming discussion, nothing but.

However I *am* interested in a lot of other games than Traveller, and some
are not even RPGs. Gaming is a recreation that blends into other recreations
as well, and my thought was for a mailing list that was less formal. I do
not want to change this list, I like it as is. Well, if anything it could be
more structured. I don't like seeing "Digest xxx" in the subject line, I
like to know what the post is about. I believe that is in the mailing list
rules, but it is often ignored. I have also seen posts that failed to cut
out the parts of the previous post that did not clarify the response. You
will note that I snip large chunks, having left only five words from your
post, and those being perfect set-up for my little diatribe.

Well, I am behind in reading this wonderful list, so I will finish with a
big thank you to all those Uber-geeks on this list that have posted such
fantastic data, opinions, thoughts, and queries on topics like:

Xenobiology 101: This has been my favorite. Juicy organic bits, yum!

Orbital Ballistics: My weakest point most likely, probably due to my poor
math skills. (You're not alone, Roc)

Book Reviews: Still waiting for First In and Far Trader, they should get
here in a couple days. Fiction reviews have been nice too.

Economics in the Third Imperium: Until this list I had not even wondered
about wich J-drive would be most economical, now I know J-2 is the most cost
effective, barring sparse steller regions.

Vilani Culture: I never liked the Vilani until I started reading the Trav
Cultures list. Some good stuff has popped up on this list too.

And many miscellaneous topics that have popped up here and there. Again,
thanks!

Oh, wonderful. Any thoughts on languages in the TU? I have just been reading
about E-Prime, and was wondering about Galanglic and whatnot.
